Despite the pandemic we were delighted to be able to hold our fifth annual bonkers.ie National Consumer Awards. Comedian and podcaster Jarlath Regan took the helm for a second year running but this time via a thoroughly entertaining ceremony broadcast online.

The National Consumer Awards are always a big night in the bonkers.ie calendar, however, this year's event was a tad different to previous years.

This year because of ongoing Covid-19 restrictions we’ve had to take our celebrations online, like countless other businesses before us. However, we’re very grateful to our judges, our partners and everyone who has helped to make this year’s awards possible and that bit more special.

The online ceremony was presided over by Irish comedian and podcaster Jarlath Regan, assuming the mantle with aplomb for the second year in a row.

The first (virtual) address of the evening was from Founder and group CEO of bonkers.ie, David Kerr who took the opportunity to let everyone know what we have been up to for the past 12 months, including what our customers and partners can look forward to in 2021!

About the awards, David Kerr said:

This past year has been unprecedented and like many businesses we’ve had to adapt accordingly. And despite it not being possible to have our usual ceremony in the Mansion House we were determined to see these awards go ahead in some form as we feel that recognising the companies that have provided excellent service and value to consumers in Ireland was more important than ever. 

This  year’s  judges  had  a  particularly  difficult  task  in deciding the winners, such was the quality of the entries, which is a testament to the hard work and dedication over  the  last  year from  all  the  companies that were nominated. These awards recognise  this  work  and  highlight  some  of  the great  competition  and  services  consumers  in Ireland are  enjoying.

The mission of bonkers.ie since we started in 2010 has been to help consumers in Ireland take advantage of the best services on offer from suppliers in Ireland and to get better value. These awards, which have grown in size and stature each year, help consumers achieve that by helping them make better informed decisions.

The attendees were also greeted by Managing Director of Bonkers Financial Services at bonkers.ie, Enda Brazel, who outlined our planned move into the mortgage broker market for the coming year, as well as both home and motor insurance - exciting times ahead so watch this space!

There was, however, only one thing on everyone's mind - to find out who came out on top at this year's awards.

Best first-time buyer mortgage - Permanent TSB

Best mortgage protection - Royal London

Best customer service - Electric Ireland

Best broadband - Pure Telecom

Grand Prix: best consumer business 2021 - Electric Ireland

The Grand Prix is perhaps the most coveted prize at the awards each year and it was Electric Ireland that took home this year's award, as well as two more for Best Customer Service and Best Community or Charity Engagement.

About the winner of the Grand Prix, Chairperson of the judging panel, Bobby Kerr said:

All the winners at today’s awards have shown excellence in consumer value over the past year and many could have been chosen as this year’s Grand Prix winner. However Electric Ireland just pipped it by demonstrating a strong commitment to customer service as well as support for the local community, while providing great value as well as assistance for its most vulnerable customers, which captures the essence of what these Awards are all about.

During the awards we ran a competition giving attendees the opportunity to win one of two sets of VIP tickets to the 3 Arena for a concert of their choice.
