Bord Gáis decreases its energy prices - Drivetime

Image audio

Bord Gáis Energy, one of the largest energy suppliers in the State, has announced that it will cut both the unit rate and standing charge on its gas and electricity by 15.5%.

Daragh Cassidy, Head of Communications at bonkers.ie, appeared on RTÉ Radio 1’s Drivetime to discuss the latest price cut, and what the coming winter will look like for Irish households.

Listen to the interview above or look at the main points discussed below.

Main points from the interview:

  • Bord Gáis’ reductions to gas and electricity prices should save the average household around €357 a year on their electricity bills and €274 on their gas bills.
  • However, even after the flurry of cuts from energy suppliers in recent weeks, prices are still double what would be considered ‘normal levels’.
  • Daragh is hopeful of further price cuts in the spring of similar amounts in the spring. But even then, that would still leave Irish energy as one of the most expensive in Europe.
  • If you switch now, before the decrease comes into place, you will still avail of the reduced prices as they come in, if you are on a variable tariff, which is the case for most Irish households.
