Bord Gáis Energy has launched special back-to-school electricity and dual fuel deals, which will allow customers to cut their energy and supermarket costs at this expensive time of year.

The sun may be splitting the stones in Ireland right now, but it won’t be long before parents are on the hunt for school books, stationery and uniforms again.

If you have kids in the Irish education system, you don’t need me to tell you that back-to-school season can be one of the most expensive times of year.

Well, the folks at Bord Gáis Energy are aware of this too, and have launched special back-to-school deals to help busy households lower their energy and shopping bills.

10% electricity discount and €75 Tesco voucher

The supplier is offering a 10% reduction in its standard price for electricity as well as a €75 Tesco voucher to customers who switch.

At the discounted rate, you’ll be charged 13.52 cent (ex VAT) per unit of electricity consumed.

If you use an average amount of electricity, you’ll end up paying about €1,043 (including taxes and charges) over the course of a year at this rate, which is a saving of €93 against standard prices.

On top of that, you’ll get a €75 voucher to use in Tesco, which should help when stocking up for the week’s school lunches when September comes.

To get this offer, you have to opt in to paperless billing, direct debit payment and a level monthly payment plan with the supplier.

Back-to-school dual fuel deal

If you switch your gas and electricity to Bord Gáis Energy, you can get a 14% electricity discount, 8% gas discount, €75 Tesco voucher and 1,000 clubcard points.

At the reduced rates, you’ll pay 12.92 cent per unit of electricity (ex VAT) and 4.54 cent per unit of gas (ex VAT).

If you have average consumption, your gas and electricity bill will be around €1,869 in year one. That’s a saving of about €166 against standard rates.

In addition, you’ll get a €75 Tesco voucher and 1,000 clubcard points which are worth about €20.

Again, you have to sign up for level pay, paperless billing and direct debit to get this offer.

How to switch suppliers

Ireland is one of the leading countries in the EU for gas and electricity switching, and the process has never been easier.

So far in 2017, we are averaging over 35,000 energy switches per month as a nation.

All you need to join the households that are snapping up savings is your MPRN and GPRN (these are written on your electricity and gas bills, respectively) and a recent meter reading.

With those bits and pieces to hand, you can switch in less than five minutes online.
