Households can save hundreds on their electricity bills in just minutes with this latest offer from one of the country's biggest energy providers.

With the official start of winter just around the corner, it means higher electricity bills are on the way for most of us as the lights stay on longer, the tumble dryer gets used more, and we spend more time indoors.

But thankfully there are still some great energy deals out there right now for those who are prepared to switch, including this latest electricity offer from Bord Gáis Energy.

So if you're looking to try avoid energy "bill shock" this winter, this could be a great deal to sign up to.

Bord Gáis Energy electricity offer

Bord Gáis Energy is offering a whopping 32% discount on its electricity to new customers, which equates to a unit rate of just under 29 cent per kWh on its standard 24-hour tariff.

If you sign up to a standard smart tariff, you can get a night rate as low as 22.31 cent

The annual standing charge, at just under €245, is among the lowest available.

At the moment households on standard rates will be paying between 35 and 42 cent for their electricity depending on their supplier. This means some households could save well over €500 a year just by switching their electricity to this offer.

On top of this, Bord Gáis is also offering €125 cashback to all new customers, which will be credited to either your first or second bill, meaning you'll save even more.

And as a Bord Gáis customer you can also sign up to its Rewards Club, which provides access to unmissable experiences, complimentary VIP upgrades and pre-sale tickets to the world-class Bord Gáis Energy Theatre in Dublin.

The contract is for one year and it’s a variable tariff. After the year is up, you’ll roll over onto a 5% discount. Or you can switch again to a new deal with a different supplier of course.

To get this new offer you must also pay by direct debit and agree to online billing but that’s pretty much standard these days.

You can sign up to this deal in minutes right now on bonkers.ie.

To fix or vary?

The effects of the war in Ukraine and the energy crisis linger on and energy prices in Ireland still remain very high by historical standards. However it doesn't look like there'll be any further price hikes over the coming months. And barring any new geo-political conflicts, some suppliers might even be able to reduce their prices slightly next year.

As this is a variable-rate offer, if Bord Gáis were to reduce its prices, then you'd benefit from this reduction as well. Your 32% discount will continue and will be applied to the new, lower standard rate.

Dual fuel

If you're also looking to save money on your gas bills, you can sign up to Bord Gáis's dual fuel deal which comes with a 30% discount on gas, a 29% discount on electricity and €100 cashback.

A tough winter for some

In October's Budget the Government announced that there would be no more energy credits this year. Although it did increase the winter fuel allowance to €38 a month.

This means most households are automatically going to be paying more for their energy this winter.

On top of this, several suppliers also hiked their electricity prices — a double whammy for hard-pressed households.

This means it's never been more important to switch and save on your energy bills this winter to ensure they remain affordable.

Bord Gáis Energy isn’t the only supplier offering great deals to new customers right now. For example, Electric Ireland is offering a 20% discount on its electricity to new customers as well as €100 welcome credit.

You might also want to go with a fixed rate or you might want to bundle your electricity with gas and go with a dual fuel deal instead. Yuno Energy recently entered the gas market and is currently offering a great dual fuel deal that comes with €335 cashback so this might suit you better.

Then to switch, all you need is your MPRN for electricity, your GPRN for gas, and a recent meter reading. If you have a smart meter, you can upload your smart meter data for the most accurate results. Here's how to access this data by using your ESB Networks account.
