Virgin Media today announced that homes and businesses in Gorey will be next to benefit from a much-needed broadband and entertainment boost.

Though many residents around Ireland were disappointed earlier this week when the news broke that The National Broadband plan would be delayed yet again; there’s good news for Gorey as Virgin Media this morning announced its exciting plans to extend its ultrafast fibre network across thousands of homes in the area.

Work in progress

Work has already begun in communities including Ramsgate Village, Gorey Hill, Woodbury, amongst others to deliver ultrafast speeds to new customers. The network aims to connect 5,000 premises across these areas with fibre to the home broadband (commonly known as FTTH) before the end of 2017, delivering future-proofed connectivity and competitive speeds.

The network is hoping to transform the the quality of broadband in Gorey, which currently has some of the lowest speeds in the country.

Free public WiFi

Virgin Media also plans to introduce FREE Public Wifi to citizens in Gorey in a bid to demonstrate its high speeds to potential new customers first hand.

A big step in the right direction

Gorey’s broadband revamp is part of Virgin Media’s bigger extension plan. Backed by parent company Liberty Global, Virgin Media is investing £3bn to extend its ultrafast fibre broadband network to an additional 4 million premises, to reach a total of 17 million homes and businesses around the globe.

Paul Farrell, Vice President of Commercial at Virgin Media, said: “Our message is simple, broadband matters.  If you want to get connected to Ireland’s fastest broadband network, join Virgin Media.”

Diarmuid Devereux, CEO of Gorey Chamber, added:  “This is wonderful news for Gorey residents and businesses. This investment by Virgin Media is a massive, and welcome, boost to our communications infrastructure.

“We are in the midst of a remarkable transformation of Ireland’s digital landscape, and Virgin Media’s Network investment program will play an important role in ensuring our cities are fully equipped to meet the challenges of the digital age in which we live.”

Once the works finish and Gorey is fully connected, those who wish to take Virgin Media’s internet services will be connected to full fibre broadband with entry level download speeds of 100Mbps, reaching up to 360Mbps for residents and download speeds of 400Mbps for small businesses.
