Households that don’t watch a huge amount of live TV but still want access to the main channels now have a cheaper viewing option.

Virgin Media has launched a new lower-cost TV package, priced at just €10 a month.

The package is aimed at households that may not watch a huge amount of live TV anymore but still want access to the main Irish and UK channels for keeping up-to-date with the news as well as viewing the big live national and sporting events.

Think of it as a slimmed-down option that gives you access to the essentials without having to pay for dozens of extra channels you may never watch.

Here’s all you need to know about the new offer...

Virgin Media’s new TV option

Virgin is offering a new slimmed-down TV package for an introductory price of just €10 a month.

The TV package includes all the main Irish and UK TV channels, and even some of the less popular ones, so you won’t be short of anything to watch. Channels include: RTE One, RTE Two, Virgin Media One, Virgin Media Two, TG4, BBC One, BBC Two, Channel 4, E4, More4, Sky News, BBC News, Film4 and many more.

It’s an attractive middle ground for those who are increasingly relying on streaming services such as Netflix, Disney+ and Prime Video, but who also like to flick on the TV every now and then for live broadcasts.

As with most TV services nowadays, it streams over your broadband (it doesn't come through cable or satellite dish) so you'll need a good broadband connection — which must be with Virgin. You can’t just sign up for the TV package or get your broadband from Eir or Vodafone for example.

Virgin offers broadband speeds from 500Mbps up to a lightning-fast 5,000Mbps. And the good news is that it's also offering some really competitive deals on its broadband.

New customers can get 500Mbps broadband for just €35 a month for an entire year (after which the price goes up to €70 a month). But if you don't think you'll be switching anytime soon and are happy to commit to a longer contract, it's offering it for €40 a month for two years which is great value.

So you could get broadband and a basic TV package for just €45 a month for an entire year or €50 a month for two years if you're happy to commit to a longer-term contract.

And if that's not enough, Virgin is also offering €100 bill credit to all new customers who sign up to any of its broadband deals.

Virgin Media's new deals

Virgin offers a range of broadband speeds from 500Mbps up to 5,000Mbps (5Gbps). And you can add either a basic TV package or a normal TV package to any of them. And contracts range from 12 to 24 months.

Below is an outline of its main deals on offer right now. But you can compare all deals from Virgin, and all the other main providers, by using our broadband comparison service. Just input your address or eircode and we'll show you all the deals at your location in seconds!

A sign of changing viewing habits

This new, slimmer package highlights how viewing habits are shifting. Many households no longer need TV packages with up to a hundred or more channels. Instead, streaming platforms cover most households' entertainment needs.

But live TV is still essential for news, sport, and the national events that get the nation talking. By offering a cheaper, stripped-down TV package, Virgin Media is recognising that many customers now just want the basics at an affordable price.

It’s obviously not suitable for those who still like watching lots of live TV, but for those who want a no-frills option alongside fast broadband, it’s a welcome new choice that could save households some decent money.
