Today I’m going to share 5 quick ways to save money this winter

Winter is here and it can be a really expensive time of year. Darker evenings mean you’re leaving the lights on longer, colder weather means you’re using more heating and you all know about how expensive the run up to Christmas can be.

So here are 5 quick ways you can save now so you can spend this winter enjoying yourself rather than worrying about how much everything is costing.

1 – Shop around for insurance premiums

A lot of health insurance premiums come up for review in January and you might also have things like motor and life insurance up for review too. It’s really important to shop around before renewing any policy if you want to get the best deal out there. We now compare health insurance and life insurance on bonkers.ie so you can easily find the best deal that way.

2 – Switch your gas and electricity suppliers

Of all of your monthly bills, it’s your gas and electricity that’s most likely to take a hike during the winter months.

But this is the easiest way to save money.

Switching to cheapest supplier saves the average household over €300 and the process can be completed online on bonkers.ie in just 7 minutes.

All you need is your MPRN, GPRN and a meter reading.

3 – Get a better savings account

Interest rates have been really low for a while now and the chances are you’re getting a very poor return on your savings.

But there are some good returns of about 3% out there, if you know where to find them.

Switching to the best savings account will leave with you an extra bit of cash in your pocket for when those big winter bills start to arrive.

4 – Review your direct debits

Take a few minutes to go through a recent bank statement and see what services you’re paying for by direct debit every month.

You might find something in there that you have forgotten you’re paying for and no longer want or need.

Taking a few minuets to cancelling a few unwanted direct debits can add up to some good savings.

5 – Ditch your landline…and maybe even your TV

If you’re currently paying for a Tripleplay bundle – that’s TV, home phone and broadband, you could consider downgrading to a broadband only plan.

Connection speeds are so good now in most places that you could rely on apps like Netflix for your entertainment and Skype and Facetime for calling friends.

Depending on what plan you’re on, downgrading like this could save you well over €50 a month.

**Lower your energy bills: http://bit.ly/2e7zAb1**

Hey guys, so the dust is settling on the 2017 Budget and people are trying to figure out exactly what it means for them. So I’m going to run through five key changes and explain how they’ll affect your pocket.

1 – USC has been cut

The hated universal social charge is being cut by half a percent for at the three lowest rates, of 1%, 3% and 5.5%. So, 1.3 million taxpayers are going to be somewhat better off because of this. If you’re earning €35,000 a year will be €175 better off over the course of a year. Another way of looking at it is you’ll have an extra €3.37 in your weekly budget.

2 – DIRT has been cut

With interest rates at an all-time low and DIRT standing at 41%, putting money into a savings account really hasn’t been very appealing lately. But it has been announced that DIRT is going to be reduced by 2% every year for the next 4 years, meaning the rate will hit 33% by 2020.

It’s a move in the right direction, but a person savings €10,000 with a rate of 1% will only be €2 better off over the course of a year.

3 – The State pension has been increased

In last year’s budget, the weekly State pension was increased by €3 and this year it has been increased by €5, but this won’t come into effect until March next year.

In addition to this, prescription charges for over 70s with a medical card have been reduced and the Christmas bonus has been increased by €24.

4- A Help-to-buy scheme for first-time buyers has been introduced

There has been a lot of speculation about what the Budget would contain to tackle the nation’s housing crisis. And the answer is a tax rebate on the previous four years, capped at 5% of the property’s value, for first-time buyers purchasing a newly-built house.

5 – Cigarettes

Finally, the one and only tax increase in this year’s budget is an increase of 50 cent on a packet of cigarettes, taking the price up to over €11. So, someone who smokes a pack a day will spend over €4,000 in the next year on cigarettes.

So there you have it, the 2017 Budget is made up of a large number of small increases and is hopefully another small and steady step in the right direction in Ireland’s road out of recession.

**Compare and Switch Gas & Electricity Suppliers: http://bit.ly/2dqshgB**

Hey guys, have you heard the news? There seems to be a bit of an energy price war underway in Ireland. So, let’s take a look back over the last few weeks, which were chock full of price cuts and special offers, and let’s talk about how you can take advantage of the falling prices.

The price war dominoes were set in motion by Bord Gáis Energy on August 30th, when they announced a 5% drop in their standard rate for electricity and a 2.5% drop in their standard price for gas. These cuts came into place on October 1st and the supplier’s customers are set to save about €67 on their gas and electricity bills. Not bad!

Two weeks after Bord Gáis Energy’s price cut, Electric Ireland made its move in the price war, reducing its standard rate for gas by 5% and saving all of its gas customers €39 a year. This cut also came into effect on October 1st.

It’s unusual for suppliers to cut gas prices before winter kicks in, but it was good to see Bord Gáis Energy and Electric Ireland breaking with tradition and passing savings on to customers before their bills take their annual winter hike.

In a direct response to these cuts, PrePayPower cut its standard unit rate for electricity by just under 1% and increased its standing charge too. This cut also came into effect on October 1st and will save existing customers about €4.18 a year.

Then, on the last day of September, the bubbling price battle turned into all out war!

The day started with Energia announcing a massive 31% electricity discount and dual fuel discounts of 25% for electricity and 24% for gas, exclusively available to price comparison website likes bonkers.ie. And at these reduced rates, Energia’s dual fuel offer became the new cheapest on the market.

But just a couple of hours later, SSE Airtricity responded with new dual fuel discounts of its own, knocking Energia off the top spot!

But Energia wasn’t finished and at 5pm they increased their dual fuel discount offers by 1% to reclaim the top spot!

As things stand, customers who switch from standard rates to the biggest discount deals through bonkers.ie could save €323 in year one.

There you have it guys, it’s a crazy few weeks in the energy market in Ireland. Price cuts of up to 5% are certainly good news, but you can see that the best way to take advantage of the price war is to switch suppliers and get those massive new customer discounts.

So there you have it guys, Ireland’s energy suppliers have been fighting it out for your affection and your business and it’s been great to see Electric Ireland, BGE and PrePaypower pass savings on to customers overnight. But as you can see, the biggest savings are available to customers who switch suppliers to take advantage of the price war.

Ireland's Energy Price War | bonkers.ie TV Ep.101

**Compare and switch energy suppliers now: http://bit.ly/2bzDd7W**

Hey guys, today I want to talk about switching energy suppliers and lowering your energy bills. I’ve put together 7 main reasons why September, and particularly September 2016, is a really smart time to switch. Let’s take a look.

1 – There’s over €300 to be saved by switching today.
There’s a bit of an energy price war underway with discounts of over 20% on offer to customers who switch. That means the average customer will save €360 by doing so, but many people save a lot more than that.

2 – Wholesale prices are down.
The wholesale price for electricity is down 27% on last year and the wholesale price for gas is down 35%. So energy supplier now have room to pass savings on to you, the customer.

3 – It’s about to get very chilly, very quickly.
Summer is over, gone the way of the Dodo! And pretty soon the first thing you do when you walk in your door in the evening is crank the heat. That means bigger bills. Switch now and get your bills down before the winter properly sets in.

4 – The PSO Levy is set to increase.
From October 1st every electricity bill in the country is going to increase by €12 a year thanks to the PSO Levy increase. You can easily offset this increase by switching before the end of this month.

5 – Other bills are soaring.
It’s no secret that Ireland is an expensive place to live these days. Rents are at an all-time high, car insurance has gone through the roof and mortgage rates are way above the EU average. Switching energy suppliers will save you money which can help offset some of these other hikes.

6 – More time indoors means more electricity consumption
The evenings are already getting darker, meaning you’re more likely to opt for a cup of tea and a movie than a late-night walk over the next few months. That means more electricity and heating usage, which of course means bigger bills. Switching now will mean that you’re paying the lowest possible rate when your consumption is at its highest. Makes sense, right?

7 – Switching is easier than ever.
It takes 7 minutes to switch. 7 minutes! And it can be done entirely online. You don’t have to phone your old supplier or your new supplier and your supply will not be cut off. All you need is your MPRN and GPRN, which are written on your bill and a meter reading. 7 minutes will make you some serious savings.

7 Reasons to Switch and Save this September | bonkers.ie Ep.96

** Compare Energy Providers Here: http://bit.ly/2bzDd7W **

Bord Gais Energy has just announced a price drop for all of its gas and electricity customers. Today I’m going to tell you how much customers stand to save.

Schools are re-opening and summer is winding down and that means we’ll soon be turning up the home heating and bracing ourselves for some big winter bills.

But there’s some very good news for Bord Gais Energy customers today, which is that, on October 1st, the supplier is dropping its standard unit rate for electricity by 5% and its standard unit rate for gas by 2.5%

Once Bord Gáis Energy’s 5% electricity price drop takes effect, the standard unit rate for electricity will fall from 15.81 cent excluding VAT to 15.02 cent excluding VAT, making that the lowest standard rate for electricity on the market.

The drop means that a year of electricity with the supplier will fall by about €47.50 for an average household, including all taxes and charges.

Now let’s look at the gas price drop.

The 2.5% drop in gas prices will take the unit rate for the fuel down from 5.06 cent excluding VAT to 4.93 cent excluding VAT. With all taxes and charges added in, that makes for an annual gas bill saving of €19.50.

So, customers who get both their gas and electricity from Bord Gáis Energy stand to save about €67 a year from October 1st.

The PSO Levy, which is paid by all electricity customers in Ireland is set to increase by nearly €14 a year on October 1st so Bord Gáis Energy’s price drop is well-timed and will be very welcome news to the supplier’s 650,000 customers.

While this morning’s price drop is undeniably good news, the biggest savings are still reserved for those who switch suppliers. There’s up to €360 to be saved by doing so today on bonkers.ie.

The PSO Levy is set to increase by 20% for all electricity customers from October 1st. Today I’m going to explain why and tell you what it means for your bills

The Public Service Obligation Levy is paid by all electricity customers in Ireland and is used to fund schemes dedicated to renewable energy generation, ensure our energy supply is secure and subsidise the use of indigenous fuels to generate electricity.

So why is it increasing?

Well, a number of renewable electricity generators in Ireland are part of a scheme called REFIT and are guaranteed a certain price for each unit of electricity they generate.

But, wholesale electricity prices are down 27% on last year, meaning that the PSO Levy has to step in to help make up the prices guaranteed to REFIT generators.

It’s also expected that the number of renewable energy generation plants in Ireland will increase over the coming year and will need PSO Levy funds too.

So what does the increase mean for your bills?

The PSO Levy is going from €68.20 to €82.04, including VAT, which is a €14 increase for all customers from October 1st. The CER had been considering a 32% increase in the PSO Levy but have opted for a 20% increase this year.

Electricity prices have been falling over the last year, which certainly softens the impact of the PSO Levy increase, but there will be plenty of customers still wondering how best to get those high energy bills down.

The good news is that there are some very competitive discounts and cashback offers available at the moment for people who switch suppliers, so that’s the best way to stay ahead of the pending PSO Levy increase.

It’s just 5 weeks until schools re open and those big back-to-school bills are looming. But today I’m going to tell you about some new discounts from Bord Gáis that could help you save money on your gas, electricity and even your back-to-school shopping.

Let’s start by looking at what’s on offer for new customers.

If you switch your gas and electricity to Bord Gáis Energy before September 4th, you’ll get a 12% electricity discount, 10% gas discount and a €75 Tesco voucher.

At those rates, your year one energy bill will be about €1,919, including all taxes and charges. That’s about €148 cheaper than standard rates and there’s that Tesco voucher to add too, which could certainly cover the cost of copybooks, stationary, schoolbags and maybe even some uniform items.

If you just switch your electricity to the supplier, you’ll save about €50 on your electricity bill against standard rates and get a €75 Tesco voucher, and if you just switch your gas, you’ll save about €63 against standard rates, but there’s no Tesco voucher included here.

It’s important to note that you must sign up for paperless billing and a level payment plan to get these discounts.

So, that’s what’s on offer for new customers, but what about existing Bord Gáis Energy customers who want to save on their back-to-school costs?

Well, if you’re an existing gas customer, you can add electricity and get a €75 Tesco voucher and some pretty competitive gas and electricity discounts, which will save you €125 on your energy bills against standard rates.

And existing electricity customers can add gas and get discounts that will take year one bills €101 below standard rates. There’s no Tesco voucher here though.

Bord Gáis Energy’s back-to-school discounts don’t quite make it the cheapest supplier in the marketplace but there are certainly some good savings to be made by switching and the Tesco voucher will go some way to offsetting some of those high back-to-school bills.

Today I’m going to tell you how to avoid current account fees with your bank

The days of free banking as standard are gone, with all banks now charging quarterly fees and some charging transaction fees from 10 cent for a direct debit and up to 35 cent for every time you use an ATM. But there are ways to minimise or avoid these fees, no matter which bank you’re with.

Let’s take a look.

AIB charges a quarterly fee of €4.50, along with transaction fees. But you can avoid this if you keep at least €2,500 on deposit for the full quarter.

Bank of Ireland charges a €5 quarterly fee, as well as transaction fees. You can avoid the transaction fees if you keep €3,000 on deposit at all times, but you will always be charged the €5 quarterly fee.

KBC charges a €6 quarterly fee along with transaction fees, but these can all be avoided if you lodge €2,500 every month

Ulster Bank charges €12 every quarter but doesn’t charge transaction fees. If you keep €3,000 in your account at all times, you’ll avoid the quarterly fee.

Finally, Permanent TSB charges €12 every quarter but doesn’t charge transaction fees. You can avoid this fee if you lodge €1,500 into your account every month. And this is the lowest fee waiver on the market, meaning it’s easiest to avoid fees with Permanent TSB.

As you can see, every bank is different when it comes to fees and it can be really hard to know if you’re paying more than you have to.

If you’re unable to meet your bank’s waiver and find you’re paying too much in fees, then you can always switch.

The Central Bank has a code, that requires your bank to help you switch to a new bank and make sure your incomings and outgoings aren’t affected. So, you should be able to switch relatively worry-free.

** Compare & Switch Energy Providers Here: http://bit.ly/1KDQqh5 **
Today I’m going to tell you 5 things to consider before signing up to a pay-as-you-go electricity plan

Number one: the unit rate

There are three companies providing lifestyle pay-as-you-go meters now; Pinergy, PrePayPower and Electric Ireland and one of the most important things to consider is, of course, the unit rate. Come June 1st, all three suppliers will reduce their standard unit rates to 15.11 or 15.12 cent per unit excluding VAT, making pre-pay electricity around €39 cheaper over a year.

Number two: Standing charges

All electricity suppliers have a standing charge that customers have to pay too. Electric Ireland and Pinergy both charge €146 here, while PrePayPower is a little more expensive at €157.

Number three: prepayment meter charges

This is a charge that only applies to pay-as-you-go suppliers and it exists so that your meter can be maintained. Pinergy and PrePayPower charge about €137 every year, while Electric Ireland charges €106 for meter maintenance.

Number four: contract breakage fees

As is the case with any supplier, you might want to break your contract before it ends if you find that it’s not right for you. To do so with PrePayPower, you must provide one month’s notice and if you don’t, you’ll be charged a meter removal fee of €50 as well as €11.25 for every remaining month. Pinergy charges a €500 meter removal fee, if you end your contract before it expires, while Electric Ireland charges a €50 exit fee.

Number five: your consumption

Research shows that prepayment customers reduce their usage by around 9%. This should save around €82 a year for prepayment customers and although it’s not enough to cover the prepayment service charge, you won’t have any more bills and will have more control over your consumption.

So, although you’re unlikely to save money by switching to a pre-payment provider, the additional control you get may be worth the extra cost. And if you are looking to reduce your bills, the best way is to switch to the cheapest discount tariffs, which you can do so now on bonkers.ie

Today I’m going to tell you about brand new electricity and dual fuel offers from SSE Airtricity, that are available only through bonkers.ie

SSE Airitricity has just launched some brand new, big discounts for new customers who switch to the supplier through bonkers.ie

The supplier is offering a 25% discount to new electricity customers, which takes the unit rate for electricity down to 12.35 cent. At that rate, the average Irish household will spend about €970 for a year of electricity, including all taxes and charges. And that’s about €211 cheaper than standard rates, which 85% of Irish people are still on.

When it comes to dual fuel, SSE Airtricity is offering 23% off electricity and 16% off gas to new customers who sign up to a dual fuel deal.

Those discounts mean that the average Irish household will spend about €990 on electricity and €824 on gas in year one, including all taxes and charges. That adds up to an energy bill of around €1,814, which is a saving of €311 against standard rates. And that’s nearly €26 cheaper every month.

To get these deals, you have to sign up for direct debit and ebilling and, as mentioned, they are only available through bonkers.ie

If you haven’t switched supplier in over a year, you’re almost certainly on standard rates, meaning you’re paying more for gas and electricity than you have to. Switching through bonkers.ie is completely free and takes no more than 7 minutes.

85% of Irish people are paying more for electricity than they have to! Are you one of them? I’m going to tell you the 4 steps to getting the cheapest electricity plan out there.

Electricity suppliers offer big discounts to try to attract you as a new customers and then quietly bump you up to standard rates after a year. And standard rates means expensive rates. So it’s vital that you switch suppliers every year to avoid those expensive standard rates.

Here are the 4 steps involved in getting the cheapest plan out there.

First – get your MPRN. This is an 11-digit number written on your electricity bill that indicates where your property connects to the national electricity network.

Step two – check your consumption level. This is also written on your bill. It’s not an essential step to switching but will help you get as good a deal as possible.

Step three – take a meter reading. Read the numbers from left to right and ignore the numbers at the end that are written in red or have a red box around them. If you have a Nightsaver meter, as 10% of Irish people do, you’ll have two readings. The number 1 will be written beside the Night reading and the number 2 will be written beside your Day reading.

Step four - go to bonkers.ie, enter a few person details and you'll see the cheapest electricity deal out there.

Switching takes 7 minutes, is completely free and can be done entirely online. That means no need to call your existing supplier and there’s no need to worry about getting cut off. It really is that simple.

Once you’ve finished switching, leave a comment below to let us know how you got on.

** Compare & Switch Energy Providers Here: http://bit.ly/1KDQqh5 **

Today I’m going to tell you about budget plans and how they can help give you peace of mind about your energy bills

Energy bills are about as unpredictable as the weather in Ireland. And the two are usually related. You’re likely to use more gas and electricity during the winter than you are during the summer.

And that can mean shock bills and budgeting difficulties. But there is a way around this! You could get a budget plan.

So what is a budget plan?

A budget plan allows you to pay your energy bills in 12 equal monthly instalments. Bord Gais’ budget plan is called ‘Level Pay’ and Electric Ireland’s is called ‘Equaliser’.

Here’s how it works.

Your supplier will estimate your bill for the forthcoming 12 months, based on existing unit rates and the amount of energy you used in the past year and you will pay the same amount every month.

Your supplier will also add what is know as a tolerance to your bill. This is a percentage on top of your annual estimate to cover the supplier in the event that you use more energy than was estimated. Tolerance can be as high as 20% with some suppliers.

This might sound off-putting, but it is merely a safety net and if you are charged more than you actually use, your account will be credited for the following year.

It’s important to note that suppliers reserve the right to change your monthly payment amount if it looks like the estimate was wrong, but you’ll always be informed of this in advance.

How do you get on a budget plan?

Well, it’s as simple as asking your supplier to set you up. And it’s completely free! We suggest you take a meter reading before doing so, so that your supplier’s estimate will be as accurate as possible.

There you have it, by getting set up on a budget plan, you will have greater peace of mind when it comes to your energy bills and won’t have to worry too much about being hit by a shock bill

Should You Get A NightSaver Meter?

Today I’m going to tell you about NightSaver Meters and how they could help you save money on your electricity bills

NightSaver Meters record your day time and night time electricity consumption separately and allow you get a reduced rate for the electricity you use at night

So when is night time?

Night time is defined as 11pm – 8am from late October to late March and defined as 12am – 9am from late March to late October

The good news here is that you don’t have to worry about adjusting your meter when winter moves to summer, you will automatically be charged at summer night time rates

Now for the big question, will it save you money?

With a NightSaver meter, you’ll be charged a reduced rate and night but your Standing Charge and day time rates are likely to be a little higher.

For example, with Electric Ireland’s NightSaver meter, you will be charged 17.18 cent per unit during the day, and 8.49 cent per unit at night time. For non-Night Saver customers, Electric Ireland’s unit rate is 16.09 cent

The Standing Charge is €174.59, which is about €45 higher than the average annual Standing Charge

However, if you shift about a quarter of your electricity consumption to night time, you should save money with a NightSaver Meter.

And obviously the more you use at night, the more you will save.

Finally, how do you get a NightSaver meter?

It’s really, really easy, just ask your supplier for one and they’ll arrange for ESB Networks to call out to your home to install one. And they’re completely free and could save you a lot of money over the course of a year.

If you have any questions about Night Saver meters or are looking for ways to reduce your electricity costs, just tweet us at bonkers_ie – thanks for watching.

Today I’m joined by bonkers.ie’s Communications Director, Simon Moynihan to talk through some of the massive recent changes in the Irish energy market in January:

M: Well Simon, January was a very busy month in the Irish energy market, what happened?

S: We saw price cuts, massive discounts and sign-up incentives.

M: And why are companies offering such big discounts now?

S: Well, wholesale gas prices are at a 6-year low, down 26% on last year. That means suppliers have more bandwidth to pass savings on to consumers.

M: 26% is a big drop, is this the size of discounts being passed on to consumers?

S: Yes and no. Electric Ireland cut gas prices, SSE Airtricity cut prices for electricity customers and Flogas cut prices too.
But these cuts are only between 2 and 2.5%, which adds up to about €20 a year. The real savings are reserved for new customers.
Energia is offering 26% to new electricity customers, while SSE Airtricity is offering 25%. Bord Gais Energy has some big discounts too, as well as cashback and free boiler service offers.

M: So, is now a good time to switch, or should people wait to see if better offers come along?

S: Prices may fall further but for every month that you wait to switch, you are missing out on savings. So, now is the right time to switch!

** Compare Energy Providers & Save: http://bit.ly/1VomghG **

Today I’m going to tell you which household appliances use the most electricity and therefore cost you the most to run

Electricity is measured in units known as kilo watt hours and the average Irish household consumes about 5,300 of these every year, at a cost of €1,182

But it’s difficult to know exactly how this consumption is spread across your household appliances.

So let’s take a look at what 1 kilo watt hour, which costs 18.26 cent under Electric Ireland’s Standard Rate, actually gets you.

You’ll use 1 kilo watt hour of electricity for about 10 minutes in an electric shower or 10 minutes of immersion water heating,

When it comes to kitchen appliances, 1 kilo watt hour gets you between 20 and 40 minutes of using your kettle, 70 to 100 minutes of using your washing machine or 70-100 minutes of using your dishwasher.

Let’s move on to your entertainment devices. You’ll use 1 kWh of electricity by watching a 28 inch TV for about 5 or 6 hours, using a desktop computer for 5 or 6 hours and fully charging your phone every day for half a year!

So, how do you turn this information into savings?

Well, you could get an Owl electricity monitor which will tell you how much electricity your appliances use. This will help you spot opportunities for reducing your usage.

Also, there are a number double-digit discounts currently on offer to new customers who switch electricity suppliers. Switching could save you over €300 a year and you can do so now on bonkers.ie

How to Switch Gas and Electricity with bonkers.ie

** Compare Energy Providers Here: http://bit.ly/1ICMtHZ **

Are you nervous about getting a shock electricity bill this winter? I’m going to tell you how you can monitor your consumption and avoid overpaying on bills.

First thing to note is that an average household consumes 5,300 kWh. And in Ireland, an average house is considered to be one with 3 bedrooms.

So those figures act as a good benchmark.

Next let’s look at what 1 kWh of electricity actually gets you in terms of appliance use. There are some common misconceptions here:

One unit of electricity looks like about 10 minutes in an electric shower, 40 minutes of running a tumble dryer and about an hour and a half of using your dishwasher.

A good rule of thumb is: if it makes things hot, it costs a lot!

Take a 2 kW oil-filled radiator for example. If you’re on a standard rate, this will cost you 36.52 cent to run for an hour, including taxes. If you run this for 4 hours every evening for the month of December when weather is cold, you’ll end up paying €43.82 for that alone. So, you can see how easy your bill can quietly creep up.

The good news is that there are a number of things you can do to help you monitor your consumption and avoid a shock bill:

* You could get an Owl electricity monitor, which will allow you to monitor how much electricity you’re actually using at a given time.
* Getting a NightSaver meter will allow you to save money if you shift more than a quarter of your electricity consumption to night time.
* And finally, switching providers could help you get cheaper rate on every kilowatt hour of electricity you use.

So, by knowing the average consumption for a home the size of yours, identifying the greediest energy guzzlers in your home and by checking for a cheaper deal on bonkers.ie, you can rest easy and not worry about a shock electricity bill this winter.

If you’ve questions about your consumption, just tweet us at bonkers_ie and don’t forget to subscribe

A lot has happened in the pay-as-you-go electricity market recently and I’ll be telling you about the latest development today.
In an industry first, voluntary pay-as-you-go provider PrePayPower has just launched a discount tariff.
This is the first time a discount has been offered by a prepay provider and it’s available for signup today.
The new deal, from Ireland’s largest and longest running prepay provider, offers new customers an 18% unit rate discount.
This discount, which is good for 12 months, will save customers around €170 over PrePayPower’s regular pricing, making it Ireland’s cheapest pay-as-you-go option right now.
So what will it cost you?
Well, PrePayPower customers currently pay around €1,310 a year for their electricity. But new customers signing up to the discount deal can expect to pay €1,140 over the next 12 months – a saving of €170.
Like most discount offers, the 18% unit rate discount expires after 12 months – and then customer roll over to PrePayPower’s standard pricing.
For customers that want to sign up, PrePayPower will install a new meter called a budget controller and customers will need to pay a €150 deposit for this - which is refundable when the meter is returned.
There are three prepayment providers in the market right now, PrePayPower, Pinergy and Electric Ireland so there’s a good bit of choice out there for customers that want the control that pay-as-you-go offers.
This control does come at a price though – all pay-as-you-go providers charge a prepayment service charge on top of the regular unit rates, standing charges, and taxes. For PrePayPower, this charge is around €137 per year.
And of course, you can compare all pay-as-you-go offers on bonkers.ie!

Is pay-as-you-go electricity a good deal? That’s what we’ll be finding out today.

Electric Ireland recently launched its Smarter Pay As You Go electricity plan, and Pinergy and PrePayPower are two suppliers that only offer pay as you go plans. Let’s look!

PAYG electricity with Electric Ireland costs about €1,288 a year for an average household. That includes, taxes, PSO Levy, Standing Charge and the daily service charge that comes with all PAYG plans.

PrePayPower has a lower unit rate than Electric Ireland, but once all charges are factored in it works out at slightly more expensive than Electric Ireland, coming in at about €1,310 a year.

Finally, a year of PAYG electricity with Pinergy comes in at about €1,318 a year for an average household.

Electric Ireland and Pinergy both offer smart in-home displays and smartphone apps which allow you to see how much electricity you’re using and how much you’re spending in real time. And the app allows you to top up from multiple devices.

But is this control worth it? Well, you can buy electricity from Bord Gáis Energy for €997 for the next 12 months if you switch through bonkers.ie – which is €290 cheaper than the lowest priced PAYG option.

So the cost of knowledge and convenience is about €24 a month. But only you can decide is that’s a good price.

** Compare Energy Prices Here: http://bit.ly/1kSlGwK **

Hello and welcome to another episode of bonkers.ie TV. I’m Mark Whelan and today I’ll be talking to our Communications Director, Simon Moynihan about the OECD’s explosive report which has revealed that Ireland has the third most expensive electricity in the OECD.

MW: As you might have heard, Ireland is the third most expensive country in the OECD for electricity. Simon, were you surprised when you heard this?

SM: No, a Eurostat report earlier this year revealed that Ireland’s electricity prices are very high too.

MW: Which countries are numbers 1 and 2?

SM: Germany and Denmark are the two most expensive.

MW: Why is Germany the most expensive? I thought that Germany was a very advanced economy and that gas and electricity would be free by now.

SM: German people are taxed heavily for their electricity use. With taxes taken out, Ireland looks even more expensive for electricity.

MW: Why is energy in Ireland so expensive? Why are we third on this list?

SM: Because we’re a small island and we gas, ship and wire most of our energy into the country.

MW: I’ve heard that wholesale energy prices are going down, yet energy prices in Ireland are going up. Why is this the case?

SM: It’s true that wholesale prices are falling, but prices to consumers are slowly falling. We’ve seen three suppliers cut prices this month alone, but the gap between wholesale and consumers prices remains large.

MW: Do you think this report will encourage more people to avail of the discounts that are currently on offer?

SM: Well, just 15% of people do switch every year, ever though there is over €300 to be saved by doing so. Hopefully this encourages people to stop overpaying!

MW: Thanks Simon. Click the link in the description to switch now!

Bonkers.ie TV Ep. 8 - Energy: Bord Gáis Energy Offers 18% Energy Discount

It’s bonkers.ie breaking news!

We’ve just heard that Electric Ireland is cutting electricity prices for all its customers from November 16th, which will see the average customer save over €24 on their annual bills.

The electricity unit rate is being cut by 3% to 16.09 cent per kwh. Electric Ireland’s standing charge is being increased by 50c a month, but even with that it’s still the lowest standing charge in the market.

This is the second time Electric Ireland has cut prices in the past year and is the third electricity price cut we’ve seen this month, following similar announcements from Bord Gais Energy and PrePayPower.

The key takeaway here is that energy prices are falling and there are new discounts to be had. Log on to bonkers.ie to switch today and avoid paying more than you have to.
