So Black Friday and Cyber Monday are almost here – those special two days when companies large and small the world over are falling over themselves to offer great deals and ways to save money. And Ireland’s broadband providers are no exception. Let’s take a look.

Let’s start with eir

From November 25th until close of business on November 28th, eir is offering €50 cashback to customers who sign up for a Dual play deal, which includes unlimited broadband and unlimited calls to landlines and mobiles in Ireland and the UK.

It currently costs an average of €60 per month, so the €50 cashback is like getting one month for a tenner.

Eir is also offering €100 cashback to customers who sign up for a Tripleplay bundle – that’s unlimited 100 Mb broadband, unlimited calls mobiles and landlines in Ireland and the UK and the eVision TV pack.

It costs an average of €67 a month over the course of the 18-month contract as is, so the €100 cashback is like getting a month and a half for free.

Both deals also come with free eir Sport.

Moving on to Sky

Customers who sign up for Sky TV by December 8th will get a free 32” Samsung TV – it costs €29.50 a month and is a 12-month contract.

On top of that, new and existing customers can get half price Sky Sports for 6 months, half price Sky Cinema for 6 months and half price boxsets for 6 months.

Next Virgin Media

The provider is offering a €50 discount every month for the first 6 months to all new Tripleplay customers

With this offer, you can get unlimited 240 Mb broadband, a home phone plan that includes free calls to landlines in Ireland and 400 minutes to landlines in international designations and over 80 TV channels for an average of €55 a month.

Finally, Vodafone

The provider is offering a €30 discount every month for the first 6 months on its broadband and TV deal, along with a choice of 6 months free eir Sport or 6 months free Netflix.

It means you can get unlimited 100 Mb broadband and 54 TV channels for an average of €60 a month.

Conclusion

No matter which broadband deal sounds best to you, or if you are among the growing number of people who prefer a broadband only deal to a Tripleplay deal, there are some very competitive offers available this Black Friday and Cyber Monday and they are all available now on bonkers.ie.

Black Friday Broadband Deals | bonkers.ie TV Ep.110

**Find a great broadband deal: http://bit.ly/2frUJ5q**

Hi guys, today I want to talk about why broadband only deals are so popular these days.

Broadband only deals are becoming increasingly popular in Ireland. In fact, here at bonkers.ie we’ve an increase of 457% in the amount of people looking for a broadband only deals as opposed to a deal that includes a landline or a landline and a TV.

Here’s why they’re so popular.

1 – Broadband speed are improving
Thanks to the development of fibre in Ireland, broadband speeds of at least 100 Mbps are available in most urban areas. That means that you can now rely on big bandwidth apps like Netflix for your entertainment and Skype for calling friends and home and abroad, making a your TV and landline surplus to requirements.

2 – Price
As you would expect, broadband only deals are generally much cheaper than a broadband plan that also includes a landline or a TV plan. Most broadband only plans are available for between €40 and €50 a month, which in some cases is less than half the price of a high-end Tripleplay package.

3 – Unlimited data
Previously, you might have been worried about using your home broadband connection for everything due to data limits. But now, unlimited data comes as standard with broadband only plans, meaning you can stream away without worrying too much about getting penalty fees. These plans are subject to fair usage policies, but you’d have to do a ridiculous amount of downloading and streaming to reach most of these.

4 – Convenience
On-demand iPlayer apps and on-demand sports apps are the norm now, meaning that a strong broadband only plan will allow you to watch what you want, when you want. And since everything is running off your home WiFi, you can also watch on whatever device is most handy, be it your smartphone, laptop or TV.

5 – Contract lengths
We’ve seen contract lengths for broadband plans come down in recent years, with many suppliers offering 12-month contracts and some even offering 30-day contracts. This is really appealing for people who are renting their homes or who do a lot of travelling and like the freedom to switch regularly.

There you have it guys, broadband plans make a lot of sense and I think we’re going to see them become more and more popular. And you can sign up for a broadband only plan of your choosing on bonkers.ie now.

**Sign up to Virgin Media and save €300 here: http://bit.ly/2dyEeQk**

Hi everyone, so Virgin Media have just announced a range of new discounts and special offers for the autumn and winter months. And there’s something in there for new and existing customers. Let’s take a look.

Let’s start by looking at what’s on offer for new Virgin Media customers.

Well, if you sign up for the company’s TV, broadband and home phone bundle, you are going to get a €50 discount every month for the first 6 months, which is a saving of €300. Another way of looking at it is that you’re essentially getting free TV for 6 months. Not bad.

But what does a Virgin Media TV, broadband and home phone bundle actually look like?

Well, you can get Virgin Media’s 360 Mb broadband, Horizon Max TV, which comes with over 100 TV channels and the company’s mobile world phone plan, which comes with unlimited calls to mobiles and landlines in Ireland and 22 international destinations.

Under the new offer, it’ll cost €45 a month for the first 6 months and €95 a month after that. And it’s a 12-month contract.

So that’s the top-shelf Tripleplay bundle, but what about the entry level bundle?

You can 240 Mb broadband, Horizon TV, which comes with over 50 TV channels and Anytime World home phone plan, which includes unlimited calls to Irish landlines and 400 minutes of calls to landlines in 22 international destinations.

It’s €30 a month for the first 6 months and €80 a month after that. And again it’s a 12-month contract.

There are a few other Tripleplay bundles between the the entry-levely and top shelf offers but every single one of them comes with a €50 discount for the first 6 months. No exceptions.

So that’s what’s on offer for new customers, but what those of you who are already Virgin Media customers. Well, if you add another product to what you’re already getting, you’ll get €20 off for the first 4 months, amounting to a saving of €80.

For example, if you’re currently getting broadband and home phone from Virigin Media, you could add Horizon Max TV for just €15 a month for the first 4 months.

Alternatively, if you’re currently getting TV from Virgin Media, you can add 360 Mb broadband for €40 a month for the first 4 months.

Virgin Media has also removed its €10 downgrade charge, so if you want to move to a lower tier bundle or cancel a premium service after 30 days, you can now do so for free. Also, if you lose your remote, it’ll just cost you €10 to replace it.

There you have it guys, new Virgin Media customers can save €300 by signing up for a TV, broadband and home phone plan before January 2nd, and exisiting customers can add TV, broadband or phone to their existing package and save €80 by doing so.

New customers can sign up to Virgin Media on bonkers.ie now

** Compare/Switch Broadband Here: http://bit.ly/2bT8djz **

Today I’m going to compare the TV, broadband and phone bundles from eir, Sky, Virgin Media and Vodafone and show the true cost and value of each.

Autumn is here and Ireland’s telecoms companies are rolling out some very competitive offers to snap up new customers for the busy TV-viewing season.

Now, TV, broadband and home phone bundles are notoriously difficult to compare like-for-like so today I’m focusing on the three main things customers care about the most – what you get, what it really costs and whether or not there are any exciting sign up offers. And It’s the entry level Tripleplay bundles that I’ll be comparing from each provider.

Let’s start with eir

What do you get?

Well you get unlimited 100 Mb broadband, a home phone plan and over 50 digital TV channels

What does it really cost?

It’s an 18-month contract and costs €25 a month for the first 6 months and €85 a month after that. So, the average monthly cost before your contract ends is €65

Anything special?

You get eir Sport, which comes with 42 live Premier League games for free and €100 cashback

Moving on to Sky

What do you get?

You get unlimited 100 Mb broadband, a home phone plan and over 50 digital channels

What does it really cost?

It’s a 12 month contract and the monthly price is €55 a month for the first 12 months. So that means the average cost over the course of the contract is well, €55

Anything special?

Sky Atlantic, home to the likes of Game of Thrones, is included in the TV channels

Virgin Media

What do you get?

You get unlimited 240 Mb broadband, a home phone plan and over 50 digital channels

What does it really cost?

It’s €40 a month for the first 6 months, rising to €80 a month after that. It’s a 12 month contract so the average monthly cost works out at €60

Anything special?

The Virgin Media app allows you to use your home phone minutes on your mobile and tablet, which is handy

Finally, Vodafone

What do you get?

You get unlimited 100 Mb broadband, a home phone plan and over 50 digital channels

What does it really cost?

It’s €40 a month for the first 6 months, rising to €80 a month after that. It’s an 18 month contract so the average monthly cost works out at €66.66

Anything special?

Yes, you can pick between 6 months free Netflix, eir Sport or multiroom viewing

So there you have it – Sky comes in first place for average monthly price, Virgin Media wins on broadband speed and, well, it’s up to you who wins on special offers.

One thing’s for sure – there are some very competitive offers available right now, which have short life spans so if you like the sound of any of these offers, jump onto bonkers.ie and sign up today

Football fans! Today, I’m going to tell you how you can get eir Sport, Sky Sports or both and explain the main differences between the two sports packages.

The new Premier League season is just around the corner and there has been a lot of talk about which sports package offers the best value for customers this season. Let’s take a look at what’s on offer with each provider.

Eir Sport is the new name for Setanta Sports. It’s a 6-channel pack that offers 42 live Premier League games, as well as every Champions League and Europa League game.

Sky Sports is promising 159 live Premier League games, including some Friday nights kick-offs and 3pm Saturday kick-offs.

So how much will each package cost you?

Well, if you’re an eir customer, you can get eir Sport for free and you can add Sky Sports for €40 a month.

If you’re a Sky customer, you can get eir Sport for €25 a month, but you must go through eir to get this and you can get Sky Sports for €37.50 a month.

Virgin Media customers can no longer get eir Sport but can get Sky Sports for €40 a month.

Finally, Vodafone customers can get eir Sport for €20 and Sky Sports for €34 a month.

Ireland’s TV providers have been competing more fiercely than Mourinho and Guardiola in a Champions League semi final second leg over the issue of live Premier League matches this season and it has led to some confusion for customers.

Now that you know what’s on offer, remember you can easily switch providers on bonkers.ie now if you aren’t happy with the options and prices available with your current provider.

Today I’m going to tell you the 4 fastest broadband speeds available in Ireland right now

There are a number of factors to consider when choosing a broadband plan; availability, price, add-ons and data limit are all important, but since most plans now come with unlimited data as standard, speed is what matters most right now since it’s what will give your household the bandwidth it needs. Let’s run through the 4 fastest speeds available right now.

In fourth place, it’s a tie between the 100 Mbps deals available from eir, Pure Telecom, Vodafone, Sky and Digiweb.

The average monthly cost during year one for this speed is €45 with eir, €44 with Pure Telecom, €40 with Vodafone, €40 with Sky and €49.95 with Digiweb.

It’s a good speed that should be sufficient for most households that like to use plenty of social media and stream Netflix from time to time. It’s also the most widely-available speed available in this list, which is another major plus.

In third place, it’s Virgin Media’s 240 Mbps deal. This is Virgin Media’s entry level speed and will cost you an average of €43.33 a month for the first year. The company’s service is only available in urban areas, but that’s still about 750,000 households.

In second place, it’s Virgin Media again, this time with their top-shelf 360 Mbps broadband package, which comes in at an average monthly cost of €53.33 for year one.

This is faster than the best speed available in the UK and was officially named the ‘fastest broadband in Ireland’ by Ookla. And it is the fastest speed that is widely available in Ireland. However, there is a speed out there that’s even faster than Virgin Media’s incredible 360 Mb speed.

In first place, it’s another tie! This time between the 1,000 Mbps plans offered by eir and by Pure Telecom. Now, it’s important to note this speed is available in less than 20 Irish towns at the moment. It’s a good bit more expensive than the other plans listed here too, at an average of €83.75 a month with eir and €85 a month with Pure Telecom.

So, if you’re in one of the lucky 1,000 Mbps towns, such as Letterkenny, Greystones or Castlebar, would you consider nearly twice the price for ten times the speed? Let us know in the comments below.

Thanks for watching the video, hope you enjoyed it. Despite Ireland’s issues with rural blackspots, there are some exceptional speeds available in certain areas these days. For more videos like this one, subscribe to our channel, you can read more about broadband, mortgages, bin charges and the like here and you can compare and switch to a faster broadband plan here.

Euro 2016 is well and truly up and running and many people are streaming matches online. So today I’m going to tell you seven ways to speed up your broadband connection so you don’t have to miss a single goal over the next few weeks!

Number one – check your speed
The first thing to do is see if you’re getting close to the speed you’re paying for. Visit broadbandspeedtest.ie to see what speed you’re really getting from your provider.

Number two – update your browser
The likes of Chrome, Firefox, Internet Explorer and Safari are regularly updated to improve performance. It’s important to make sure you’re working with the latest version to get the best speed possible.

Number three – move your router
The closer your laptop, phone or tablet to your router, the better your connection speed will be. It’s a good idea to set up your router in whatever room you do most of your football viewing. But if you really want to crank up the speed, plug in an Ethernet cable – it can be ten times faster than a wireless one.

Number four - free your router from obstructions
Things like thick walls, baby monitors and microwaves can interfere with your router’s signal. Put your router in an elevated position, far away from these types of obstructions to allow an evenly-distributed signal.

Number five – secure your network
Your WiFi signal probably extends beyond the walls of your home, making it possible for your neighbours to jump onto your connection and stream the Euros on your dime! Securing your network with a strong password will help prevent this.

Number six - update your anti-virus software
Malware and other forms of virus can infect your device and slow everything down. Make sure you have up-to-date antivirus software installed on your devices.

Number seven – switch providers
If your broadband still isn’t fast enough to watch all the goals from the Euros online, it might be time to switch providers. While Ireland still has some rural blackspots, the majority of the country can get speeds of at least 100 Mb, with incredible speeds of 360 Mb available in most urban areas.

You can see what speeds are available in your area by clicking the the link in the description.

7 Ways to Speed Up Your Broadband for Euro 2016 | bonkers.ie TV Ep.53

Today, I’m going to talk about rural Ireland and when it can finally expect to get high-speed broadband

Ireland scores 20th out of 28 EU countries for broadband access and this is largely due to the fact that only 8% of ‘rural Ireland’ has high-speed broadband. So, today I’m going to tell you about what is actually being done to bridge the urban-rural digital divide.

Eir

When eir rebranded in September, It made superfast 1,000 mbps broadband available in 15 rural communities and has now committed to equipping 1.9 million homes and businesses with superfast fibre-to-the-home broadband by 2020. Sounds pretty good.

Last week, the company revealed the locations of 100,000 new homes that will get access by the end of this year. Towns like Cobh, Dingle and Claregalway can expect their broadband needs met once and for all.

NBP

As eir presses ahead with its plan, the Government’s National Broadband Plan has also committed to bringing 30 Mbps broadband to 750,000 homes by 2020.

The contract to actually supply this broadband will be put to tender soon and there are at least 10 bidders hoping to win.

One such bidder is SIRO. This is ESB and Vodafone’s joint venture that aims to offer superfast fibre-to-the-building broadband at incredible speeds of 1,000 Mbps.

Problems

Despite the ambitious goals and impressive capabilities now at the disposal of a number of companies, it’s not all smooth sailing.
You see, under EU law, state funds such as those backing the National Broadband Plan can’t be used to service an area in which commercial providers are present.
So, as eir expands into different rural communities, the NBP is excluded from moving in. And this could make the NBP contract less valuable to bidders and ultimately create confusion.
Outro
So, at long last there is some movement in providing rural Ireland with adequate broadband, with 100,000 new locations to get access before the end of the year. But, many households will wait until they are actually getting these promised speeds before getting too excited.
In the meantime, you can see what speeds are available in your area by visiting bonkers.ie now.

- Which provider offers the cheapest broadband-only plan? -

Today I’m going to tell you which provider is offering the cheapest broadband-only plan on the market, and explain exactly what you’ll get for your money.

Last week, the European Commission released its digital scoreboard and it turns out that, as a nation, we are paying twice the EU average for our broadband.

Not good news. But that doesn’t mean there aren’t good deals out there, if you know where to them. And that’s what we’re here for. Let’s look at the cheapest deals available at the moment.

Pure Telecom’s Purely Broadband package is the cheapest broadband-only plan available right now, coming in at €39 a month. For that, you get speeds of up to 100 Mbps, unlimited data and an 18-month contract.

Vodafone’s Simply Broadband plan is just €1 more expensive on a monthly basis. With it, you also get 100 Mbps speeds and unlimited data. At 24 months, the contract is a bit longer too.

Up next is eir’s Fibre solo offer. It costs €45 a month, but is discounted to €30 for the first 3 months for new customers. Again, it’s 100 Mbps and unlimited data and an 18-month contract. It’s important to note that it’ll cost you an extra €2 a month if you don’t pay by direct debit.

Now, Pure Telecom’s, Vodafone’s and eir’s plans are all very, very similar. But what if you want something even faster? Well, that’s where Virgin Media comes in.

Virgin Media work off their own network, unlike the others I’ve mentioned which all piggy back eir’s network. And that allows them to offer some pretty impressive speeds.

You can get 240 Mbps broadband, which is unlimited, for €50 a month, which is discounted to €30 a month for the first 4 months. To get this price, you have to register an online account with Virgin Media, but that’s very easy to do.

Finally, if you want even faster broadband than that, you could get Virgin media’s 360 Mbps package, which costs €60 a month. And this is discounted to €30 a month for the first 4 months. Again, it’s an 18-month contract.

So, there you have it. As a nation we are paying more than our EU friends for broadband, but by switching you could bring you monthly bill down a lot without compromising on quality of service. Pure Telecom is the cheapest, but Virgin Media is the fastest.

Today, I’m going to tell you some of the smartest ways to get Sky Sports and Sky Movies won’t have to miss any football or films over the festive period.

Well, the best value packages are Tripleplay packages – that’s where you get your broadband, TV and home phone all from the one provider. So, they are the packages we’ll look at today.

With Sky, you can get Sky Sports, unlimited superfast broadband, calls to landlines on weekends and evenings for €97.50 a month.

With Virgin Media, you can get Sky Sports, along with unlimited 240 Mbps broadband and 400 minutes of calls to landlines for €110 a month.

Eir’s offer is slightly different. You can get Sky Sports, unlimited superfast broadband and unlimited anytime calls to Irish landlines and mobiles for €61 a month for the first six months, which will then rise to €113 a month after that.

It’s an 18-month contract with eir so the average monthly cost works out at €96 a month.

If you’re more of a movie buff than footy fanatic, you’ll be more interested to know about how to get Sky Movies.

Well, with eir, you can get Sky movies as part of a Tripleplay package for €49 a month for the first 6 months and €101 a month thereafter. Since that’s an 18-month contract, you’ll pay an average of €85 a month.

With Virgin Media, you’ll pay €102 a month for a Tripleplay package that includes Sky Movies.

And finally with Sky, you’ll pay €87 a month for 6 months and €107 a month thereafter. Since that’s only a 12-month contract, you’ll pay €97 a month on average.

So there you have it, they’re some of the best value ways to get Sky Sports or Sky Movies in time for Christmas. And all of those deals are available through bonkers.ie

Bonkers.ie TV Ep.17: Smart Ways to Get Sky Sports and Sky Movies

** Compare Broadband Providers Here: http://bit.ly/1QLYjAP **

Today, I’m going to talk you through 4 simple steps to choosing the right broadband provider for you.

The first thing you should do when choosing a new broadband provider is to check which plans are available in your area

Unsurprisingly, Ireland’s larger cities have the greatest range of options, including fibre connections.

The most common type of connection in Ireland is an ADSL connection, which carries signals on the traditional telephone network

Some rural areas in Ireland remain restricted, but at least the Government’s National Broadband Plan is seeking to address that.

The second thing to consider is your unique usage patterns.

If you mainly use the internet for email and social media, a speed of 10 Mbps should be enough.

However, if you watch a bit of YouTube and Netflix, you’ll want a speed of up to 25 Mbps to avoid getting a stuttering stream.

And if you’re a big gamer or someone who downloads a lot of rich media content, you’ll want a speed of over 50 Mbps.

The next thing to consider is your usage limit:

An increasing number of broadband packages now come with unlimited data as standard, but this is still guided by a ‘fair usage policy’, which means that you may still incur fees if you use more than 30 GB of data in a month.

The peace of mind of having an unlimited plan can be worth a lot.

That leads me on to step number four of choosing the right broadband provider, and that is the number of internet users in your household.

Most Irish homes have multiple devices using the same Internet connection, which can slow down connection speed and lead to high data usage .

So if you’re in a busy household, an unlimited data plan is probably a smart choice.

So by checking availability in your area, considering your browsing habits, looking for an unlimited plan and taking the number of users in your household into account, you’ll be well-placed to choose the right broadband plan for you.

Bonkers.ie TV Ep.14: Moving Home? Setup Your Home Utilities in Few Clicks

Hello and welcome to another episode of Bonkers.ie TV!

Today we will be comparing Ireland’s two quadplay providers, Virgin Media and eir.

For those who don’t know, quadplay is digital TV, broadband, home phone and mobile, all from the one provider.
--

** Let’s start by comparing Broadband **

Virgin Media offers superfast broadband speeds of up to 240 Mbps. This is the fastest in Ireland that is widely available, but is generally only available in urban areas.

eir provides speeds of an incredible 1,000 Mbps in 15 communities around the country, but its most common speed is up to 100 Mbps.

Despite the fact that Virgin Media can offer faster average speeds than eir, both should be more than fast enough for your requirements and, importantly, they’re both unlimited.
--

** Moving on to mobile **

Virgin Media offers unlimited data, calls and texts for €25 a month. And if you were a UPC customer before they re-branded to Virgin Media, you can get your first 3 months for free. Virgin don’t offer handsets at the moment, so it’s just SIM-only.

eir’s bundled mobile plan comes with free calls to eir phones, 100 any-network minutes, unlimited texts and 1GB of data. You can get this as a SIM-only plan without a contract plan or with a handset and a 24-month contract.

While Virgin Media’s mobile offer looks better value than eir’s, it’s important to note that Virgin only offers 3G, while eir offers 4G.
--

** Let’s talk about telly! **

Virgin Media’s top-shelf TV offer comes with over 100 channels, 22 of which are in HD. You can record 4 TV shows and watch a 5th live and watch from any device with Horizon Go. Virgin Media’s My Prime service also allows movie and boxset streaming.

With eir, you’ll get 85 TV channels. You can record two TV shows at once and watch a third and the eir Vision app allows you to watch from any device. You’ll get free multiroom viewing for 6 moths.

When it comes to TV, it’s all about taste.
--

** For those of you who still use home phones **

Virgin Media’s quadplay package offers unlimited calls to landlines and mobile in Ireland and 400 minutes to 22 international destinations.

When it comes to eir, you get unlimited anytime calls to Irish mobiles and landlines.
--

** So, how much do each of these packages cost? **

Virgin Media’s quadplay package will cost you €90 a month for the first 3 months, and will then rise to €115 a month once you start paying for Virgin Mobile.

With eir, new customers will pay €43 a month for the first 4 months if you sign up online and will pay €110 a month afterwards

So, Virgin Media is probably a little bit better, but eir is a little bit cheaper.
