To mark bonkers.ie's 5th birthday, MD and co-founder David Kerr, shares the company's story so far. The changes that have taken place across energy, banking and broadband since the company was founded are discussed, as is the new bonkers.ie website. Video Content: MW: Welcome to a very special episode of bonkers.ie TV. Today I’ll be joined by Dave Kerr, the MD and co-founder of bonkers.ie on the 5th anniversary of the company’s foundation. Hi David, I suppose the first thing to say is “happy 5th birthday to bonkers.ie”! How does it feel to have reached this milestone? DK: It feels really great. Starting a business in a recession is a big challenge. Thank you to our consumers and suppliers for helping us to get here! MW: How did bonkers.ie come into existence? DK: In 2009, Ireland was grappling with the recession and there were many budget cuts, salary cuts and tax hikes; and people had less take-home pay. It was difficult for people to get access to the right information to get the best deals and reduce their bills. It felt like the right time to help Irish households get the right information. I had spent 10 years working in prices comparison in the UK and I thought it was time to give something like that a go in Ireland. MW: I’m sure it’s been a journey with plenty of twists and turns along the way. What are the biggest changes you’ve seen in Ireland since you founded the company? DK: We deal in three major categories, energy, entertainment and money. In energy, there have been dramatic changes. We have seen deregulation in the market and companies can now set their own prices. We have 4 new suppliers in the energy market with 80 different tariffs on offer. Surprisingly, 85% of people are still on expensive standard rates. People should check once a year to see if they’re missing out on discounted tariffs. In broadband, the cost per Mbps has fallen from €20 to 9 cent! There are also savings to be had with bundles. In the money category, we’ve seen bad news. DIRT has increased to 41% and interest rates have fallen, meaning we are earning 74% less on our savings than we were in 2010. In general, the market is more competitive and there is more choice. That is where we fit in. MW: So, savings returns have fallen, broadband is now faster and people are paying more for energy than they have to. You’ve just overhauled the bonkers.ie website – what can visitors expect from the new site? DK: Hopefully an even better experience! We focused on usability to help our consumers to access information faster and to understand it all easier. There’s a huge amount of information that we could show. We’ve noticed that consumers are using the site on tablet and smartphones, with over 40% of our traffic coming from such devices now. People can now transact on mobile devices too, in a small number of minutes. MW: So finally, can you give viewers an idea of what’s in store for the future of bonkers.ie? DK: The main things is to keep up with the technologies that are out there to help us deliver a world-class service. We are probably going to add another product area soon. Search-compare-buy is what we’re all about. And we want to provide it in new areas. It’s important to us that consumers are treated fairly and with respect so that they’re not forced into a malfunctioning website. We want to make bonkers.ie user experience great! MW: Exciting times!
