Bonkers.ie urges energy caution

Price comparison and consumer website Bonkers.ie has urged consumers to be aware of their rights when it comes to doorstep sales by energy companies. New rules governing door-to-door energy selling are due from the energy regulator this year and will include a checklist, describing how energy agents should behave when selling door-to-door. "The Commission for Energy Regulation's decision to bring in a doorstep checklist is very welcome," said David Kerr, managing director of Bonkers.ie.

Kerr said research showed that one in eight householders experienced unreasonable pressure from cold callers to sign up to new energy suppliers. "Most agents work for commission and represent just one company, so using an independent comparison service after a doorstep sales call can help households verify sales claims and see if there's a better deal," he said.
