What is the fastest Broadband TV deal I can get?

Getting the fastest broadband for you depends on a number of factors, the most important of which is where you live. Your broadband speed is largely determined by your location, how far you are from your local exchange, the availability of cable broadband, telephone line broadband or satellite.

Using our broadband comparison tool finder you can specify where you live so you are shown only the results that are relevant to your home.

What is Superfast Broadband?

Superfast broadband is also called fibre broadband. This type of broadband uses the latest technology to deliver speeds of up to 1,000Mb/s download speed, although speeds of up to 100Mb/s are more common.

How can I make my broadband speed faster?

Broadband speed is not all about provider, it is also about how you access broadband in your home. Making sure your WiFi connection is working properly in your home is the quickest way to make sure that you are getting the fastest broadband in your home.

In our broadband guide we identified 7 ways to speed up your broadband speed.

  1. Test your speed (use our free broadband speed test tool)
  2. Update your browser
  3. Reposition your router
  4. Free your router from obstructions
  5. Secure your network
  6. Install anti-virus software
  7. Switch providers

The most important way you can speed up your broadband connection is to compare broadband deals and switch providers !

When will we get faster broadband in rural areas?

If you live in a rural area, your choice of broadband providers may be restricted, particularly if telephone line based services are limited. This is often due to a lack of infrastructure or a long distance from the local exchange. In that case, wireless or satellite broadband may be the best options available.

Regardless of who you choose are your telephone line broadband provider, the network is operated by openeir - the wholesale division of eir. The rural broadband network is constantly being improved with a network expansion planned by openeir to the benefit of rural broadband customers

What’s the difference between fibre-to-the-cabinet (FTTC) and fibre-to-the-home (FTTH) broadband connections?

The fastest broadband speeds in Ireland are delivered via fibre optic cables of which there are two types of distribution: fibre-to-the-cabinet (FTTC) and fibre-to-the-home (FTTH).

FTTC is the most most widely available form. It delivers broadband via high-speed fibre optic cables over long distances to a cabinet on the road near your home. The connection is then diverted into copper cables to finish the short distance to your property. This diversion causes the connection to lose speed but speeds of up to 360Mb/s (dependant on your provider) can still be obtained. The further you are from the cabinet the slower your connection will be.

FTTH is where the fibre cables run directly to your home (meaning that you won’t lose any speed in any conversions) and speeds of up to to 1000Mb/s are possible.

Currently, the most widely available FTTC connections are available from Virgin Media, who offer both 240Mb/s and 360Mb/s connections in urban areas.

When it comes to FTTH connections, companies like eir and SIRO currently offer 1000Mb/s speeds in a few select areas of Ireland.
