3 launched in 2005 and is Ireland's fastest growing mobile network. 3 operates Ireland's largest high speed network and is fast approaching 500,000 customers in Ireland. 3 has 26.8 million customers worldwide and is Europe's leading 3G operator. 3 is the market leader with over 200,000 mobile broadband subscribers in Ireland and 4.5 million worldwide. 3 was the first to launch mobile broadband in Ireland with a datacard modem in 2006, as well as being the first operator in Ireland to offer a pre-paid mobile broadband service. 3 operates the most advanced high speed network in the country and uses technology to support speeds of up to 7.2 mb per second, upgrading to 14.4 mb per second at the end of 2010. 3 has 94% population coverage for high speed mobile broadband, voice and text and will have nationwide coverage by the end of 2010.
3 is 100% owned by Hutchison Whampoa Limited, a leading international corporation committed to innovation and technology. HWL own various businesses around the globe, from port operators and retailers to property development and infrastructure and of course the most technologically-advanced and marketing-savvy telecommunications operators. Before launching 3, HWL ran the hugely successful network Orange, which it later sold and invested in the first 3G licences. 3 worldwide now holds 3G licences in Ireland, Australia, Austria, Denmark, Hong Kong, Italy, Macau, Norway, Sweden and the UK.
