Consumers can save over €260 a year by shopping around for cheapest deal

By Aideen Sheehan Irish Independent Consumer Correspondent

Irish people are the keenest switchers in Europe, with over 40% hopping to a new supplier in the last three years.

Surprisingly, the best deals at present involve separate gas and electricity deals, according to comparison website bonkers.ie.

The website yesterday became the first one in Ireland to be accredited by the Commission for Energy Regulation for providing accurate and transparent price information on energy prices.

The current best deal to switch to is Flogas for gas and Bord Gais for electricity, according to the site. This is based on a customer who is currently with Bord Gais for gas and Electric Ireland for electricity at standard rates.

Customers could save €113 a year on gas by switching to Flogas Natural Gas Direct Debit Discount tariff, bringing the average bill down from €876 to €762.

They could save a further €151 on electricity with Bord Gais 13pc Discount (Direct Debit & Paperless) tariff bringing the yearly total down to €965.

This would give them a combined saving of €264 per year on standard rates.

Airtricty Dual Saver would be the best dual fuel option, saving €195 to €207 off gas and electricity on standard rates. But, as well as direct debit and e-billing, a customer would have to sigh a two-year contract.

However, as always, it is only new customers who get the cheapest rates as introductory discounts are only available once, said site owner Simon Moynihan.
