We highlight hidden charges and a few underhand banking practices that can ensnare the unwary. Niall Brady reports
The European commission has capped roaming charges for calls and texts but there are fewer restrictions on data roaming. the commission requires that phone companies cut you off when data roaming charges exceed EUR 50 per month. They must also when you exceed 80% of this limit.
Simon Moynihan of Bonkers.ie, a price comparison website said: "Vodafone's bill pay customers can get data roaming for EUR 2 for up to 50MB or data in many parts of Europe including Britain, France and holiday destinations such as Greece, Italy and Spain
This is reasonable compared with 02, which charges EUR 19.92 for 50MB. My advice to O2 customers is to turn off data usage while abroad unless it's necessary. one full size photograph sent from an iPhone uses more than 1MB of data, so be careful about posting holiday pictures to Facebook from your phone."
