Bord Gáis Energy has announced a brand new 24% electricity discount to new customers. At this rate, Irish households with average consumption will save €219 by switching to the supplier.

Bord Gáis Energy has increased its top electricity discount from 23% to 24%, making it the cheapest electricity price plan currently available in Ireland.

The new deal, which is available for sign up now on bonkers.ie, is only being offered to new customers who switch to the supplier and opt in for Level Pay and paperless billing.

The 24% discount takes the price for a unit of electricity down to 11.42 cent, excluding VAT. When all taxes, standing charges and the PSO levy are added in, a household with average consumption will spend about €917 in year one, which is €219 cheaper than what customers on standard rates will pay.

Price war?

This is the second time in a month that Bord Gáis Energy has increased its discount offer to new electricity customers, and the move could spark a response from other electricity suppliers in the Irish market.

When Bord Gáis Energy announced its 23% electricity discount in October, it prompted Energia to improve its new customer offers.  And since then, we’ve seen Flogas cut gas prices for existing customers and Electric Ireland offer €175 cashback to new customers.

It will be interesting to see if Bord Gáis Energy’s latest offer sparks a resumption of the price war that took place last month.

Ways to lower energy bills

There are many ways for Irish households to lower their energy bills, but switching suppliers is by far the easiest way to make significant savings.

Over 85% of Irish households are paying what are known as “standard rates” for gas and electricity. These are rates that have no discount attached the them and are generally the most expensive out there.

There are some very competitive discounts available to customers who switch suppliers at the moment, but these cheap rates usually expire after 12 months, meaning that customers who haven’t switched in a year or more are almost certainly paying more than they have to.

A timely cut

bonkers.ie MD, David Kerr, welcomed Bord Gáis Energy’s announcement this afternoon, saying, “winter can be a very expensive time of year, so it’s good to see Bord Gáis Energy offering new savings to customers.

The move could encourage other energy suppliers to improve their offers too, which would could be very good news for households gearing up for Christmas”.
