Just over a week ago, UPC began informing customers that prices for their packages would be changing, effective from June onwards. The bulk of the pricing announcement will involve an increase, however there are some price decreases announced as part of the price change which are welcomed.

UPC attributes some of the cost increases to the cost of purchasing content from outside sources requiring some of the cost to be passed on to customers. When asked by bonkers.ie for clarification on price adjustments, a UPC spokesperson commented:

"The price relates to UPC’s continued investment in improving our products and services. In particular investments in content and upgraded equipment to provide the digital experience, speeds and entertainment that people want.  It is also the case that content buying costs fromTV broadcasters and movie houses have increased. In fact,  it is important to note that, UPC recently introduced new offers including price reductions. Customers can get all the benefits of UPC’s Fibre Power Essential bundle including 50 Mb Broadband with totally unlimited download capacity, Phone including Mobile 100mins and Digital Select for €66 a month (previously this was €69). For Customers seeking a lighter option, UPC introduced a €59 a month Fibre Power Essential bundle with 50 Mb Broadband, phone and a 10 GB per month download capacity."

The UPC spokesperson further commented: "There is a modest price change of 3.9% on average. That is about €2.40 per month depending on the UPC services being used. UPC is continung to add value, striking the right balance between services and pricing."

UPC have invested over €500,000,000 in their Fibre Power network over the last number of years and have recently passed the threshold of supplying over 1 million services to Irish homes.
